Similan Marine Park
Similan marine park is national marine park of Thailand. Similan marine park is actually archipelago of 9 islands. Located in the Andaman sea and part of Phang Nga province, the park was established in 1982. The archipelago is situated some 70 kilometres /44 miles/ Northwest of Phuket and 90 kilometres /56 miles/ West of Phang Nga town.
Similan marine park is thought to be one of the best diving sites in the world. With water temperature of 30 degrees C /86 degrees F/ all the year round, underwater visibility more than 30 metres /100 feet/, white sandy beaches and tropical vegetation covering the islands. You can find more than 200 species of hard corals, huge gorgonian fans, sea-bass, napoleon fish, batfish, rays, turtles, barracudas leopard sharks and guitar rays. During the period April-May there is a lot of plankton in the sea which attracts manta rays and whale sharks. Keep in mind that fishing is not allowed in order to preserve the underwater flora and fauna. Also boats are not permitted to anchor in the area of Similan marine park for the same reason.
