Thale Ban Marine Park

Thale Ban marine park covers an area of 196 square kilometres /76 square miles/ and is located South of Satun province. The park passes along the boundary with Malaysia. The distance from Bangkok to the Thale Ban national marine park is about 1000 kilometres /625 miles/. Thale Ban marine park was announced as national marine park of Thailand in 1980.

Most of the area of Thale Ban marine park is mountainous with the highest mountain in the area being the Chin mountain, 756 meters /2300 feet/ above sea level. Flora and fauna that is present there is tropical evergreen forest, mangroves forest, more than 60 species of mammals, many fish species like stonerollers and eels as there are a large swamps in the national park. The biggest attraction of Thale Ban marine park is the huge variety of bird species - more than 280 can be found – and the area is actually one of the best destinations in Thailand for birdwatching as you can find 8 different species of hornbill. In addition you can observe seasonal migration of flocks of more than 1000 raptors which fly over the park in March and October each year. The reason for this is the Thale Ban lake surrounded by forest and providing superb conditions for the birds. Also you can find intact trails that lead to caves and waterfalls.
